This tip explains how to bypass the installation wizard and perform a silent installation on the command line for VanDyke Software Windows applications, including SecureCRT®, SecureFX®, and the VShell® server.
If you are installing VanDyke applications on a number of Microsoft Windows machines, it can be time-consuming to run the installation wizard on each machine. Or, if you are upgrading your software, you may want a quick way to install the software and keep all your current settings.
A silent installation allows you to bypass the wizard panels and run the installer non-interactively from the command line. When run silently, the installer accepts all default settings, or keeps all of your existing settings if you are upgrading.
Here's how to silently install SecureCRT or SecureFX for Windows client applications. This example demonstrates a silent install with the SecureCRT+SecureFX bundle installer for version 9.1.1. When you run the command, substitute the installer .exe name with the actual name of the installer that you have downloaded.
Open a command prompt (CMD.exe, PowerShell.exe, etc.), change directory (cd) to the location of the installer, and then run the installer with the appropriate command line options to achieve a silent install:
scrt-sfx-x64.9.1.1.2638.exe /s /v"/qn"
This example demonstrates a silent install with the VShell for Windows installer, version 4.6.2. When you run the command, substitute the installer .exe name with the actual name of the installer that you have downloaded.
Log in to the machine where you want to install the software.
Open a command prompt as administrator (CMD.exe, PowerShell.exe, etc., launched by choosing "Run as Administrator"), change directory (cd) to the location of the installer, and then launch the install .exe with the appropriate command line options to achieve a silent install. For example:
vshell-x64.4.6.2.2549.exe /s /v"/qn"
A silent install of VShell may require a reboot of your server. You can control the installation reboot behavior by passing in Windows Installer REBOOT flag value to suppress any reboot operation that the installer might trigger. For example:
vshell-x64.4.6.2.2549.exe /s /v"/qn REBOOT=ReallySuppress"
